Middle River (Missouri River tributary) facts for kids
The Middle River is a small stream located in the central part of Missouri, specifically in Callaway County. It's like a smaller river that flows into a much bigger one, which is the famous Missouri River.
Where Does the Middle River Start and End?
The Middle River begins its journey in the eastern part of Millersburg. This starting point, called the headwaters, is quite high up, about 890 feet (270 meters) above sea level. From there, the stream flows mostly towards the south-southeast.
As it travels, the Middle River passes a few interesting places. It goes about 3.5 miles (5.6 kilometers) west of Fulton, a city in Missouri. It also flows under a major road, US Route 54, which is southwest of Fulton.
The river continues its path, passing under another road, Missouri Route 94. Then, it reaches the wide, flat area next to the Missouri River, known as the floodplain. This happens about 2.5 miles (4.0 kilometers) east of Tebbetts.
After entering the floodplain, the Middle River takes a turn. It meanders, or winds, to the northeast for about 2 miles (3.2 kilometers). Finally, it joins the mighty Missouri River south of Mokane. At this point, where it meets the bigger river, the elevation is much lower, around 515 feet (157 meters).
