Imagine a building where Coca-Cola first started being bottled! The Dixie Coca-Cola Bottling Company Plant is a very old and important building. It is located at 125 Edgewood Avenue in Atlanta, Georgia. This building was once the main office and bottling factory for the Dixie Coca-Cola Bottling Company. It's where Coca-Cola changed from a drink sold at soda fountains to a popular bottled drink.
This historic building was built in 1891. It was named a National Historic Landmark in 1983. This means it is a very special place in American history. It is one of the few buildings left in Atlanta from Coca-Cola's early days. Since 1966, the building has been used by Georgia State University as a student center. It is known as the Baptist Student Center or Baptist Collegiate Ministry.
About the Building
The old Dixie Coca-Cola building is in downtown Atlanta. You can find it at the corner of Edgewood Avenue and Courtland Street. It is a two-story building made mostly of brick. There is a cool square tower, called a turret, on the corner. This turret is made of wood.
The building has an interesting shape. This is because the land it sits on is not a perfect square. On the Edgewood Avenue side, there are three large arched windows on the first floor. The roofline above the second floor has many different shapes. This style is called Queen Anne.
History of the Building
The building was finished in 1891. From 1900 to 1901, it was home to the Dixie Coca-Cola Bottling Company. This company was started in 1899 by Benjamin Franklin Thomas and Joseph Brown Whitehead. They were the only ones allowed to bottle Coca-Cola for a large part of the United States.
Coca-Cola was first sold as a fountain drink in Atlanta in 1887. There were ten important places linked to Coca-Cola's early history. This building is the only one still standing today. It shows how important this place was to the company's growth.
Over the years, the building changed. By the 1970s, it was not in very good shape. But since then, it has been fixed up. The outside of the building looks much better now. It continues to serve as a student center for Georgia State University.
