Dixon Mills is a cool place to live in Jersey City, New Jersey. It's not just new buildings; it's made from the old factory buildings of the Joseph Dixon Crucible Company. This company used to make important things like pencils and special containers called crucibles. The factory was busy from 1847 to 1895.
Today, if you visit the lobby of Dixon Mills, you can find a small museum. It has old items and stories from the factory's past. It's like a little time capsule right where people live!
The Story of Dixon Mills
The Joseph Dixon Crucible Company started in Salem, Massachusetts. But in 1847, its founder, Joseph Dixon, decided to move the factory. He chose a spot in what is now the Van Vorst Park area of Historic Downtown, Jersey City, New Jersey.
For many years, this factory was very important. It produced a lot of different items. These included strong crucibles, which are special pots used for melting metals. They also made pencils, colorful crayons, stove polish, and even lubricants.
In the middle of the 1980s, something exciting happened. The old factory buildings were given a new life. They were carefully changed into homes, but their original look was kept. Even the bridges that connected the buildings were saved. This means you can still see how the factory used to be, even though it's now a place where people live.
