Playing for Clubs
Starting Out in Football
Djamel Mesbah was born in Zighoud Youcef, Algeria. He began his football journey in France, playing for a youth club called US Annecy-le-Vieux. In 2001, scouts from the Swiss club Servette FC noticed his talent. He joined Servette and worked his way up to the senior team. He made his first professional appearances in the 2003–04 Swiss Super League season, playing in 11 games and scoring 3 goals.
Time in Switzerland
In 2004, Servette FC faced money problems, so Mesbah left the club. He then joined FC Basel. At Basel, he mostly played as a substitute and appeared in 11 games, scoring 1 goal. In January 2006, he was loaned to FC Lorient in France. However, he got injured before he could play any games for them.
In the summer of 2006, Mesbah signed with FC Aarau, another Swiss club. He played there for two seasons and was a regular starter. On July 1, 2008, he moved to FC Luzern. He only played 6 games for Luzern, all of them coming off the bench.
Moving to Italy
On September 1, 2008, Mesbah signed with Avellino, which was his first club in Italy.
Playing for Lecce
In July 2009, Mesbah joined U.S. Lecce. At Lecce, he usually played as a left-sided midfielder. Sometimes, he also played as a central midfielder or even a left wing-back. His ability to play well in many different positions made other Italian clubs interested in him.
Joining A.C. Milan

On January 18, 2012, Lecce announced that Mesbah would be moving to A.C. Milan, one of Italy's biggest clubs. The next day, Milan confirmed the transfer, and Mesbah signed a four-and-a-half-year contract.
Mesbah made his first appearance for Milan on January 26, 2012. He started in a cup game against Lazio, which Milan won 3–1. On March 20, 2012, he scored his first goal for Milan in a 2–2 draw against Juventus in the Coppa Italia semi-finals. He played a total of twelve games for Milan, including two in the UEFA Champions League against Arsenal and Barcelona. The game against Arsenal was his first time playing in that important competition.
In the 2012–13 season, Mesbah played less often due to injuries and his form. Because of this, Milan decided to sell him to Parma F.C. in January 2013.
Time at Parma and Livorno
Mesbah did not play much at Parma either, making only seven appearances until the end of the 2012-13 season. The next season, he played only four more games. So, in January 2014, he was loaned to A.S. Livorno Calcio.
At Livorno, Mesbah was a regular starter. He played as a left wing-back. However, he could not help Livorno avoid being relegated from the top league.
Sampdoria and Étoile Carouge
On September 1, 2014, Mesbah signed with U.C. Sampdoria. This was his fourth different club since January 2012. He later joined Étoile Carouge FC in January 2019.
Playing for Algeria
In May 2010, Djamel Mesbah was called up to the Algeria national team for the first time. This was to prepare for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. He made his debut for Algeria on May 28, 2010, in a friendly game against the Republic of Ireland. He was then chosen to be part of the final 23-man squad for the World Cup.
Mesbah also represented Algeria in the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations. He was an important player for his country during these major tournaments.
International Goals
Mesbah scored one goal for the Algerian national team.
