Doab facts for kids
A Doab is a special word used in India and Pakistan. It describes a piece of land located between two rivers. This land stretches out until the two rivers join together. Think of it like a natural triangle of land, with a river flowing along each of its two sides. Doabs are often very important because the soil there is usually rich and fertile, making them great places for farming.

Famous Doabs
There are many doabs in India and Pakistan, but some are more well-known than others.
The Ganga-Yamuna Doab
One of the most important and famous doabs is found in India. It lies between two major rivers: the Ganges and the Yamuna. This area is very fertile and has been important for farming and human settlements for thousands of years. Many cities and towns have grown up in this rich land.
The Punjab Doabs
The Punjab region is another area famous for its doabs. The word "Punjab" itself means "land of five rivers" (panj means five, and ab means water or river). Each of these rivers creates several doabs. These doabs in Punjab are also very fertile and have been crucial for agriculture in both Indian Punjab and Pakistani Punjab.
Types of Land in a Doab
Within any doab, you can often find two main types of land, especially near the rivers:
- Khadir: This is the land that is very close to the river. It is usually low-lying and gets flooded often when the river rises. These floods deposit new, fresh soil, making khadir land extremely fertile. It's like the river gives it a fresh layer of nutrient-rich dirt every time it floods!
- Bangar: This land is higher up and further away from the river. It does not usually get flooded. The soil in bangar areas is older and might not be as fertile as khadir land, but it is still good for farming.
