Before it became an amusement park, the area was known as the Playland Speedway. This speedway first opened in 1941 for dog racing. However, it closed down just two years later, in 1943.

From Speedway to Amusement Park

In 1947, the old racing track was rebuilt. It became a dirt track, ready for new uses. Then, in 1948, two brothers named Abe and Louis Slusky had a great idea. They decided to bring an amusement park to this very spot. That's how Dodge Park Playland was born!

The park quickly became a popular place for families and kids to have fun. It offered exciting rides and attractions for everyone to enjoy.

The Park's Closing

Dodge Park Playland was open for 22 years. It brought joy to many people in Council Bluffs and nearby areas. The park operated until 1970. Sadly, it closed after Abe Slusky passed away.

After the park closed, its rides were moved. They found a new home at Frontier City. This was another amusement park that the Slusky brothers also owned. The old racetrack area continued to be used for racing until 1977.

What's There Now?

Today, the land where Dodge Park Playland once stood is very different. It has become a beautiful parkland. It is also the eastern entrance to the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge. This bridge connects Iowa and Nebraska, and it's a popular spot for walking and biking.
