What is a Historic District?

The First Cluster: Shops and Homes
One part of the district includes buildings that were once busy places. You can find the old Doe Run Garage here. There was also a general store where people bought their everyday items. Nearby, there are several homes where people lived and raised their families. These buildings show how the community grew.
The Second Cluster: Mills and Town Hall
Another important area was once home to a cotton mill. This mill was a place where cotton was processed into fabric. Later, in 1898, a new building was put in its place. This new building became the town hall, where important village decisions were made. It also held a dairy, which is a place where milk products are made. Close by, you can still see the ruins of an old paper mill. These ruins remind us of the village's industrial past.
The Third Cluster: The Old Grist Mill
The third main area is centered around a very old building called a grist mill. This mill was built way back in 1744. A grist mill is a place where grain, like wheat or corn, is ground into flour. It was a very important building for the community. Farmers would bring their crops here to be processed.
Other Important Buildings
Besides these clusters, the district also includes other significant buildings. You can find the Doe Run School, which was where children in the village went to learn.
