Dolf Verroen's Writing Journey
Dolf Verroen started his career working for a newspaper. He first began writing with a poetry book called In los verband in 1955.
His First Children's Book
His very first children's book was Het boek van Jan-Kees. It was published in 1958. What's super cool is that he actually wrote this story when he was only 14 or 15 years old! Later, this book was republished with a new title: Paarden, van die enge grote.
Winning Awards for His Books
Dolf Verroen has won many important awards for his writing. One of the most special is the Zilveren Griffel award, which he won four times!
- In 1979, he won for De kat in de gordijnen.
- In 1981, he won for Hoe weet jij dat nou?.
- In 1987, he won for Een leeuw met lange tanden.
- And in 2019, he won for Droomopa.
In 2006, Dolf Verroen also won a big German award called the Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis. He won it for his book Wie schön weiß ich bin. This book was a German translation of his Dutch book Slaaf Kindje Slaaf. It was inspired by a trip he took to Suriname in 1976. The book was later re-released in Dutch as Hoe mooi wit ik ben.
Special Honors and Events
In 1999, Dolf Verroen received a special honor. He became a Ridder (which means Knight) in the Order of the Netherlands Lion. This is a very important award given to people who have done great things for the Netherlands.
In 2016, he wrote a special book called Oorlog en vriendschap. This book was the Kinderboekenweekgeschenk, which is a gift book given out during the annual Boekenweek (Dutch Book Week).
Many talented artists have drawn pictures for Dolf Verroen's books. Some of these illustrators include Jet Boeke, Thé Tjong-Khing, and Harrie Geelen. Their drawings help bring his stories to life!
