Where is Dolores?
Dolores is in the western part of the Soriano Department. It sits right next to the San Salvador River. This river flows into the bigger Uruguay River about 20 kilometers (12 miles) away.
The city is mostly surrounded by a farming area called Chacras de Dolores. Dolores has a natural port, which is a great place for boats. Main roads like Routes 21 and 96 connect Dolores to other parts of Uruguay.
A Look Back in Time
Dolores was started a long time ago, in September 1801. Before Uruguay became independent, Dolores was known as "San Salvador." At that time, it was considered a "Villa," which means a town.
On November 26, 1923, Dolores officially became a "Ciudad," or a city. This change was made by a special law.
The 2016 Tornado
On April 15, 2016, a very strong tornado hit Dolores. This tornado was rated an F3 on the Fujita Scale, which means it was quite powerful. Sadly, four people lost their lives, and over 200 people were hurt. The city worked hard to recover after this event.
