Who is Dolores Johnson?
Dolores Johnson Sastre was born in Valencia, Spain, in 1969. Her mother was from Valencia, and her father was from Equatorial Guinea. She studied law at the University of Valencia. After finishing her studies, she started working in media and communications.
Her Early Career in TV
In 1994, she worked as a TV presenter for a show called En primera persona on the Nou channel. Later, she joined RTVE, a big Spanish TV network. There, she presented the weather and worked as a production editor. She then became a news presenter.
In 2002, she became the editor of Canal 37, a TV station in Alicante. She also started her own company. Her goal was to make Canal 37 a major regional media group.
Working at Radiotelevisió Valenciana
In September 2003, Lola Johnson was named a subdirector at Nou, a TV channel.
Leading TV Channels
When Francisco Camps became the head of the Generalitat in 2004, Johnson returned to Valencia. She was made the director of Punt 2. This was the second public TV channel in Valencia. During this time, she also directed and presented Encontres. This was a cultural show in the Valencian language.
In 2007, after Camps was re-elected, she became the news director of Radiotelevisió Valenciana (RTVV). This is a big public broadcasting company. She was in charge of the news when a major political investigation, known as the Gürtel case, began.
In November 2009, Johnson moved up again. She was appointed director of Televisión Valenciana. This role meant she oversaw all the public TV stations in the region.
Becoming a Government Official
In June 2011, Lola Johnson took a big step into politics. President Camps chose her to be the Councilor of Tourism, Culture, and Sports. She also became the spokesperson for the Council of the Generalitat Valenciana. This government was led by the People's Party.
This made her the first woman of Afro-European descent to be part of the Valencian government. When she took on these new roles, she left her job at RTVV.
Changes in Leadership
Just one month later, in July 2011, President Camps resigned. This happened because of his connection to the Gürtel case. The new president, Alberto Fabra, kept Johnson in her roles. She continued as a councilor and spokesperson.
On December 5, 2011, Johnson spoke in the Cortes Generales (the Spanish Parliament). She confirmed that the Valencian government would sell the Ciudad de la Luz. These were movie studios started by filmmaker Luis García Berlanga.
On December 7, 2011, President Fabra announced that Johnson would no longer be the spokesperson. She was replaced by José Císcar
. However, Johnson continued her work as the Councilor of Tourism, Culture, and Sports. In December 2012, Johnson received a new position within the People's Party. She was appointed executive secretary for the coordination of study commissions.
