Maria Dolors Bramon Planes (born December 31, 1943) is a Spanish expert who studies languages, history, and teaches at universities. She is especially knowledgeable about the Muslim world.

About Dolors Bramon

Dolors Bramon married Ernest Lluch in 1966. They had three daughters: Eulàlia, Rosa, and Mireia. In 1970, she moved with her family to Valencia. They lived there for ten years, until 1977.

Her Education and Teaching Career

From 1968 to 1983, Dolors Bramon worked as an editor. She helped create the Gran Enciclopèdia Catalana, a large encyclopedia in Catalan. In December 1977, she earned her degree from the University of Barcelona. From 1979 to 1984, she was an assistant professor there. She also earned a special doctorate in Semitic Philology. This means she became an expert in ancient languages like Arabic and Hebrew.

In 1984, she started teaching at the University of Zaragoza. She became a full professor there in 1986. A year later, in December 1987, she returned to the University of Barcelona. There, she became a full professor of Arab and Islamic Studies. In 1998, she earned another doctorate, this time in Medieval History.

Her Research and Studies

Dolors Bramon is an expert on the Islamic period in the Crown of Aragon. This was a powerful kingdom in Spain during the Middle Ages. She especially studies Catalonia, a region within this kingdom. Her work focuses on groups like the Mudejars and Jews. These were religious minorities living in these lands.

She also studies Islamic beliefs and the role of women in Islam. She looks at how Arabic words have influenced languages in Spain.

Other Important Roles

In 1990, she became the director of the Historical Archive of Banyoles. She held this job until 2008. She also advised the Institut d'Estudis Catalans. This is an important institution that studies Catalan language and culture. She started working with them in 2000.

In 2004, she became a professor of Islam. She taught at the Higher Institute of Religious Sciences of Barcelona. Today, she is part of several important groups. These include the Institut d'Estudis Catalans and the Associació d'Escriptors en Llengua Catalana. She is also part of groups that study women in Islam and the Arab and Muslim world. Since 2014, she has been the president of the World University Service of the Mediterranean (WUSMED).

Awards and Recognition

Dolors Bramon has received several awards for her work:

  • 1976: She won the Joan Fuster Essay Award [ca]. This was for a book called Una lengua, dos lenguas, tres lenguas. She won it as part of a group of six people.
  • 1981: She won the Joan Fuster Essay Award again. This time it was for her book Contra moros i jueus.
