Ernest Lluch Martín (born 21 January 1937 – died 21 November 2000) was an important Spanish economist and politician. He was a member of the Socialists' Party of Catalonia (PSC). From 1982 to 1986, he served as the Minister of Health and Consumption. This was during the first government led by Felipe González from the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE). Sadly, Ernest Lluch was killed in 2000 by a group called ETA.
Early Life and Education
Ernest Lluch was born in a town called Vilassar de Mar, which is in the Barcelona province of Spain. He was a very bright student. He earned a special degree called a PhD in Economic Sciences from the University of Barcelona (UB). He also continued his studies in Paris at the famous Sorbonne.
While he was teaching at the University of Barcelona, he was arrested several times. He was even removed from the university. This happened because he was actively against the government of Francisco Franco, who ruled Spain at the time. Despite these challenges, he wrote important books about Spain's economy and politics.
Later, he became a professor of Economics at the University of Valencia in 1974. He also held a special teaching position in the History of Economic Doctrines back at the University of Barcelona. His last big job was as the Director of the Menéndez Pelayo International University in Santander, from 1989 to 1995.
Political Career and Public Service
In April 1980, Ernest Lluch became a spokesperson for the Socialists' Party of Catalonia (PSC). He spoke for them in the Congress of Deputies, which is like Spain's parliament. Two years later, in the 1982 general election, he was chosen to represent Barcelona in the Lower House of parliament.
After the election, Felipe González became the Prime Minister. He chose Ernest Lluch to be his Minister of Health and Consumption. Lluch held this important job until 1986. During his time as minister, he worked to improve healthcare and consumer rights for people in Spain.
In May 1986, he decided to leave politics. He went back to teaching History of Economic Doctrines at the University of Barcelona. On January 2, 1989, he started his role as Director of the Menéndez Pelayo International University in Santander.
His Tragic Death
Ernest Lluch was tragically killed in 2000. He was shot twice in the head at his home in Barcelona. The Basque separatist group, ETA, claimed responsibility for his murder. This act of violence was carried out by a part of ETA known as the 'Comando Barcelona'.
In 2002, the three people from the 'Comando Barcelona' who were involved in his murder were arrested. They were found guilty and sentenced to 33 years in prison for this terrible crime. Ernest Lluch is remembered as a dedicated public servant and a victim of political violence.
