Domicėlė Tarabildienė (born in 1912 in Andrioniškis, died in 1985 in Vilnius) was a talented Lithuanian artist. She was known for her amazing photographs, graphic designs, and illustrations in books. She helped shape art in Lithuania during her time.

Early Life and Art Studies

Domicėlė Tarabildaitė was born in Andrioniškis. She was one of nine children in her family. After finishing school at Panevėžys Gymnasium, she moved to Kaunas.

From 1929 to 1935, Domicėlė studied sculpture in Kaunas. Her teacher was the famous artist Juozas Zikaras. She was very good at sculpture. Her final project was so impressive that she won a special award. This award allowed her to study art even more in other countries.

In 1937, she traveled to Paris, France. Her husband, Petras Tarabildas, and their oldest son, Arunas, went with her. Her two other children, Giedrė and Ramon, stayed in Lithuania. While in Paris, she won a medal for her illustrations at a big international art show. She also spent two years studying sculpture at a famous art school there. She explored Southern Europe too, learning about different cultures and art styles.

When World War II began, Domicėlė was still in Paris. She quickly returned to Lithuania to be with her younger children.

Discovering Photography

In the 1930s, Domicėlė Tarabildienė became very interested in photography. At that time, photography was not really seen as an art form in Lithuania. She was one of the first to explore it creatively.

She experimented with many different photo techniques. For example, she used "soft focus" to make pictures look dreamy. She also tried "double exposure," which means taking two pictures on the same film. This created unique and sometimes strange images. She often took pictures of herself in different poses. She also made photomontages, which are like collages made with photos.

After the war, Domicėlė stopped taking photos. Photography was not a way to earn money in Lithuania back then.

A Master of Graphics

From 1935 onwards, Domicėlė focused mostly on graphic art. This included creating illustrations for many books. In 1940, she won a major award for her work. After this, she became known as one of Lithuania's most important graphic artists.

She developed a special way to illustrate traditional Lithuanian folk stories. Her unique style greatly influenced younger artists. During the Soviet period, artists in Lithuania could not travel much. Because of this, Domicėlė's artistic style became a standard for many artists in the country.

Exhibitions and Awards

In 1950, Domicėlė Tarabildienė had her first big art show in Kaunas. Many people came to see her work. Her talent was recognized with several important awards. In 1972, she received the State Prize of the Lithuanian SSR. Then, in 1974, she was named the People's Artist of the Lithuanian SSR. These were very high honors for an artist in Lithuania.

In 2012, a large exhibition was held in Vilnius. It showed about 120 of Domicėlė's artworks. This event celebrated 100 years since her birth and honored her lasting impact on Lithuanian art.
