Domingo Crisanto Delgado Gómez (born 1806 in Güímar, Tenerife, Spain – died 1858 in San Juan, Puerto Rico) was a very famous musician and composer from the Canary Islands. He lived in the 1800s and became the main organ player at the Cathedral of San Juan Bautista in Puerto Rico.
Early Life
Domingo Crisanto Delgado Gómez was born in 1806 in a town called Güímar on the island of Tenerife. When he was 15 years old, in 1821, he joined the music group at La Laguna Cathedral on his home island. He quickly showed how talented he was. He wrote many musical pieces, known as scores, for the cathedral and for a place called the Convento de Santa Catalina de Siena.
His Career as a Musician
Crisanto started as an apprentice, learning to be a choirmaster. A choirmaster is the person who leads a choir. His teacher was Miguel Jurado Bustamante. Later, Manuel Fragoso took over as choirmaster in 1828.
Domingo Crisanto worked as an assistant choirmaster and as the second organ player at the La Laguna Cathedral. He was also a very good composer. He learned to play the violin and taught music to others.
After his teacher Bustamante passed away, and because Fragoso became ill, Crisanto hoped to become the main choirmaster at the La Laguna Cathedral. However, he never received that important job.
Moving to Puerto Rico
Because he didn't get the job he wanted, and because he was looking for new opportunities, Domingo Crisanto decided to move. He traveled to Puerto Rico and joined the music group at the Cathedral of San Juan Bautista there.
In Puerto Rico, he became one of the most important musicians in the country. He held several positions at the cathedral. He was the second assistant choirmaster, a substitute organist, and eventually the main organist. He kept the title of main organist until he passed away. For the last eight years of his life, he also taught organ playing and music composition. One of his students was the composer Felipe Gutiérrez y Espinosa, who later helped start the school for Puerto Rican composers.
