In 2017, he won his first doubles title at a smaller tournament called the Columbus Challenger.

In 2018, he won his first match on the main ATP Tour at the 2018 Winston-Salem Open. He was again a lucky loser for this tournament.

Later that year, at the US Open, he surprised many by reaching the fourth round. He had to play through qualifying rounds just to get into the main tournament. After his great performance at the US Open, he entered the top 100 players in the world for the first time.

In 2020, Koepfer achieved another important milestone. He reached the quarterfinals of an ATP Tour Masters 1000 event at the 2020 Italian Open. In 2022, Koepfer faced a challenge when he had an arm injury. This injury caused him to miss the entire clay-court season. As a result, his ranking dropped quite a bit. However, he worked hard to recover.

By the end of 2022, he won another Challenger title in Calgary, Canada, which helped him get back into the top 200. In 2023, he won two more Challenger titles in Mexico City and Turin, Italy.
