Dominique Demers was born on November 23, 1956. She is a French-Canadian writer who is very famous for her Mlle Charlotte book series. She also has a special advanced degree in children's literature.

Her Early Life and Education

When Dominique Demers was 17, she moved to Montreal, Canada. She went to McGill University to study children's literature. She loved learning about books for young people.

After her first degree, she continued her studies. She earned a master's degree at the University of Québec. Then, she got a doctorate from Université de Sherbrooke. Both of these higher degrees were also in children's literature. She even did special research about kids and the media. Dominique Demers also taught at a college called Collège Charles-Lemoyne.

Her Work as a Journalist

For 15 years, Dominique Demers worked as a journalist. She wrote for popular magazines and newspapers like L'actualité, Châtelaine, and Le Devoir. Her writing was so good that she won an award called the Judith-Jasmin Award in 1987.

Starting Her Writing Career

In 1991, Dominique Demers wrote her very first book for children. It was called Dominique Picotée. This book was the start of her "Alexis" series. The stories in this series were inspired by her own three children: Simon, Alexis, and Marie.

Books That Became Movies

Many of Dominique Demers's books have been turned into movies!

  • One of her books, Marie-Tempête, became a TV movie in 1998. It was called Un hiver de tourmente.
  • Two other books, La nouvelle Maîtresse and La Mystérieuse Bibliothécaire, were made into a film in 2002. This movie was called The Mysterious Miss C. Dominique Demers even wrote the movie's script herself!
  • A sequel to that movie, The Incomparable Miss C., came out in 2004. This film was based on her books Une bien curieuse factrice and Une drôle de ministre.
  • There have also been plans to make her book Maïna into a movie.

Her Children's TV Show

Dominique Demers also hosted a children's TV show for Radio-Canada. The show was called Dominique raconte... (which means "Dominique tells stories..."). On the show, she read about 150 different books to young viewers. The show ran for three seasons.

Awards and Recognition

Dominique Demers has received many honors for her work.

  • In 1997, the Université de Sherbrooke named her an "Ambassador."
  • In 2003, she was the first writer to be honored by the Faculty of Letters and Communication at the Université du Québec à Montreal.
  • She was also given the Order of Canada in 2004. This is a very high honor in Canada.
  • She was nominated several times for the Governor General's Award. This is another important award for Canadian writers. She was nominated in 1992, 1993, and 1997.

Dominique Demers lives in Montreal with her husband. She also spends time writing in a beautiful area called Laurentides.
