Becoming a Lawyer and Politician

After finishing his studies, Donald MacRae Browning became a lawyer. He was officially allowed to practice law in Newfoundland in 1888. This is called being "called to the bar."

Working for the Government

In 1893, he tried to become a member of the Newfoundland assembly for the Harbour Grace area, but he was not successful that time. However, from 1894 to 1897, he worked as a "solicitor" for the assembly. A solicitor is a lawyer who gives legal advice.

In 1897, he was elected to represent Twillingate in the Newfoundland House of Assembly. This is like being a member of parliament today. He served there until 1899.
