The magazine Donald Duck is a super popular weekly comic book from the Netherlands. It's all about Disney characters and first came out on October 25, 1952.
When it first started, the magazine was made by the team behind a women's magazine called Margriet. Every person who subscribed to Margriet got the very first Donald Duck issue for free! This comic is mostly for younger kids. It even has a special page where readers can send in their letters. In 2019, the magazine celebrated a huge milestone: its 3,500th issue!
Who Reads Donald Duck?
Donald Duck is one of the most-read comic books in the Netherlands. A study in 2014 looked at how many Dutch kids, aged 6 to 12, read comic books. It found that Donald Duck was the most popular, with 81% of kids reading it. Another magazine, Donald Duck Extra, came in second place.
In 2014, about 1.6 million people in the Netherlands, aged 13 and older, read Donald Duck. This included 940,000 men and 660,000 women. Back in 2008, it was also the most-read magazine among students in the Netherlands. About 10% of students read it regularly.
Donald Duck in the News
Sometimes, Donald Duck magazine gets attention in the news! In 2012, the Dutch Prime Minister, Mark Rutte, even appeared as a character in the magazine. He said he was very honored because he was a big fan of Donald Duck when he was young.
In 2013, Donald Duck himself became a museum guard in a special story. He was even chased through the famous canals of Amsterdam! This was done to celebrate two big events: the reopening of the Rijksmuseum (a famous museum) and the 400th anniversary of Amsterdam's beautiful canals.
