Who Was Donald Howard?

Donald Howard was a British politician who served his country in various roles. He came from a family with a long history of public service.

Early Life and Education

Donald Howard was the son of Robert Jared Bliss Howard and Margaret Howard, 2nd Baroness Strathcona and Mount Royal. His mother also held the title of Baroness. He attended two famous schools: Eton, which is a well-known boarding school, and Trinity College, Cambridge, a part of the famous University of Cambridge.

A Career in Politics

Donald Howard began his political journey by becoming a Member of Parliament (MP). An MP is someone elected by the public to represent them in the UK Parliament, helping to make laws for the country.

He was first elected in the 1922 general election for the area of Cumberland North. He served as an MP until 1926. In that year, his mother passed away, and he inherited her special title, becoming the 3rd Baron Strathcona and Mount Royal. This title had a unique rule that allowed it to be passed down to women, which is how his mother had received it from her father, the first Baron.

Serving the Country

After becoming a Baron, Donald Howard continued to serve in the government. He was part of the National Government during the 1930s.

From 1931 to 1934, he held the position of Captain of the Yeomen of the Guard. This is a ceremonial role, often involving duties at royal events. Later, from 1934 to 1939, he served as Under-Secretary of State for War. In this role, he helped manage and oversee matters related to the country's army and defense.

His Family Life

On October 25, 1922, Donald Howard married The Honourable Diana Evelyn Loder. She was the daughter of Gerald Loder, 1st Baron Wakehurst.

Donald and Diana had five children. When Donald Howard passed away in 1959, his eldest son, Euan, inherited his title and became the 4th Baron Strathcona and Mount Royal.
