Donald Maclean, 3rd Laird of Brolas (born around 1670, died 1725) was an important leader in the Clan Maclean. He held the title of Laird of Brolas, which meant he was a land owner and leader of his family branch. Donald lived during a time of change in Scotland and was involved in some major historical events.

Life and Times

Donald Maclean's father, Lauchlan Maclean, 2nd Laird of Brolas, passed away when Donald was young. As he grew up, Donald decided to join the army. He served as a lieutenant during the time when Queen Anne ruled Great Britain.

The 1715 Rising

In 1715, there was a big event in Scotland called the Jacobite Rising. This was an attempt by the brother of Queen Anne to reclaim the throne. Donald Maclean of Brolas played a part in this. He served as a lieutenant-colonel, a high-ranking officer, under his cousin, Sir John Maclean, 4th Baronet. They fought together at the Battle of Sheriffmuir. During this battle, Donald was badly wounded on his head.

Family Life

Donald Maclean was married to Isabella. She was the daughter of Allan MacLean, 10th Laird of Ardgour. Together, Donald and Isabella had several children:

  • Sir Allan Maclean, 6th Baronet: He became the 4th Laird of Brolas and later the 22nd Clan Chief of Clan Maclean.
  • Catherine Maclean: She married Lachlan, who was the son of Donald Maclean of Coll.
  • Isabella Maclean: She married John Maclean of Lochbuie.
  • Anna Maclean: She married Allan Maclean of Drimnin.

Donald also had another son named Gillian Maclean. Gillian later became a lieutenant in Guernsey and had his own family.

Later Years and Legacy

Donald Maclean passed away in 1725. After his death, his son, Sir Allan Maclean, 6th Baronet, took over as the 4th Laird of Brolas. Later, in 1750, Sir Allan also became the 6th Baronet and the 22nd Clan Chief of Clan Maclean. This shows how important Donald's family was in the history of the clan.
