Lauchlan Maclean, 2nd Laird of Brolas (1650–1687) was an important Scottish leader. He was the second person to hold the title of Laird of Brolas, which meant he was the head of a branch of the Maclean family and managed their lands.
Life of Lauchlan Maclean
Lauchlan Maclean was born in 1650. His father was Donald Maclean, 1st Laird of Brolas. People thought Lauchlan was a wise and calm person. He had good judgment and a steady personality.
Working with Others
Lauchlan sometimes took his time to make decisions. Because of this, he worked closely with Lachlan Og MacLean, 1st Laird of Torloisk. Lachlan Og was known for being very energetic and quick to act.
Lauchlan Maclean became the guardian and manager for Sir John Maclean, 4th Baronet. He worked with Torloisk to manage the family's lands and properties. They successfully prevented Archibald Campbell, 1st Duke of Argyll, from taking over the Maclean estates. Eventually, the Duke of Argyll agreed to accept the island of Tiree instead of trying to claim all the Maclean lands.
Role in Parliament
Lauchlan was a member of the Scottish Parliament for Argyllshire. This was during the time when James II of England was the King's representative in Scotland. King James tried to convince Lauchlan to support new laws. These laws would have removed punishments for certain religious groups.
However, Lauchlan believed it was his duty to vote against these laws. He did not want to go against what he thought was right. So, when these laws were being discussed in Parliament, he chose to be absent. This way, he did not have to vote for something he disagreed with.
Family and Death
Lauchlan Maclean was married to Isabella. She was the daughter of Hector Maclean, 2nd Laird of Torloisk. Lauchlan passed away in 1687 when he was 37 years old. His son, Donald Maclean, 3rd Laird of Brolas, took over as the next Laird of Brolas.
