Early Years and Education

Donald Monro was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1727. His father, Alexander Monro (primus), was also a famous doctor. Donald came from a Scottish family called Clan Munro.

He went to Mr Mundell's school in Edinburgh. After that, he studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh. He worked hard and became a Doctor of Medicine on June 8, 1753.

Moving to London

After finishing his studies, Donald Monro moved to London, England. He became a licensed doctor with the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1756. In 1758, he was chosen to be a doctor at St George's Hospital.

Doctor During Wartime

In 1760, during a war called the Seven Years' War, Dr. Monro became a doctor for the British army. He worked in Germany helping soldiers. He stayed there until 1763. Important leaders like Duke Ferdinand of Bavaria and General the Marquis of Granby praised his work.

After the war, he stopped working for the army. He then started his own private medical practice in London.

Important Medical Groups

Dr. Monro joined many important groups.

  • He became a member of the Royal Society in 1766. This is a very old and respected science group.
  • He also became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1771. He held important roles there several times.
  • In 1783, he helped start the Royal Society of Edinburgh. This was another important group for science and learning in Scotland.

Dr. Donald Monro passed away in London on June 9, 1802. He was 74 years old.
