Donard Forest is a beautiful woodland area in Northern Ireland. It's located right next to Newcastle, County Down. The forest sits at the bottom of the amazing Mourne Mountains. It's a great place to explore nature and enjoy the outdoors.

Exploring Donard Forest

Donard Forest is a popular spot for visitors. You can walk along its many paths and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. The forest is managed by the Forest Service Northern Ireland. They help keep it a wonderful place for everyone.

The Glen River

The Glen River flows right through Donard Forest. It adds a lovely sound to your walk. You'll find three old stone bridges crossing the river. These bridges are perfect for taking cool photos!

Special Trees in the Forest

Donard Forest is home to some unique trees. In the north-east part, there's a special group of trees called a Heritage Stand. These are Scots and Corsican pine trees. They were planted way back in 1927.

Exotic Plants from Long Ago

Near the Glen River, there used to be a large house called Donard Lodge. It was built in the 1830s by the Annesley family. Even though the lodge was taken down in 1966, the Annesley family left behind some amazing trees. They planted unusual trees from other parts of the world. You can still see giant Redwood trees and spiky Monkey Puzzle trees growing there today.

Old Stone Shelter

As you explore the forest, you might find a small stone shelter. It's not far from the river. This shelter was built a very long time ago, in 1842. It's a neat piece of history hidden in the woods.
