Dongio facts for kids
Dongio is a small village located in the canton of Ticino, which is a part of Switzerland. It used to be its own separate town, called a municipality, but it has since joined with other nearby villages.
A Glimpse into Dongio's Past
Dongio is quite old! The first time it was ever written about was in the year 1188. Back then, it was known by a slightly different name, Deuci.
For many years, Dongio was a small municipality that included the nearby villages of Marogno and Motto. Its population changed over time. For example, in 1682, about 532 people lived there. By 1808, the number had gone down to 391. After that, the population stayed pretty steady for a long time, with 488 people in 1900 and 423 in 2000.
Dongio Today: Part of Acquarossa
In 2004, Dongio joined forces with several other villages in the area. These villages were Castro, Corzoneso, Largario, Leontica, Lottigna, Marolta, Ponto Valentino and Prugiasco. Together, they all became part of a new, larger municipality called Acquarossa. This means that while Dongio is still a village, it is now part of a bigger community with shared services and local government.
