Donnchad I, Earl of Fife facts for kids
Donnchad, Earl of Fife (born around 1113, died in 1154), also known as Duncan, was an important Scottish leader. He was the first powerful Gaelic lord to receive his land back from King David through a special agreement called a feudal charter in 1136. This was a big deal because it showed how the King was starting to organize land ownership in Scotland.
Duncan was a very important figure among the native Scottish nobility. When King Malcolm became king, it was Duncan's job to introduce him to the kingdom and guide him. Sadly, King Malcolm passed away not long after he was crowned.
Duncan's Family
Duncan had two sons and one daughter:
- Duncan II: He was Duncan's oldest son and took over as Earl of Fife when his father died in 1154.
- Adam of Fife: He was also known as 'Adam, son of the Earl'. He was mentioned in important documents around 1163 or 1164.
- Afreka: She married Harold the Elder, who was the Earl of Orkney. They had two sons and two daughters together.
