Donnchad II (died 1204), also known as Duncan II, became the Earl of Fife when he was still a child. He took over from his father, Duncan I. In those days, an Earl of Fife was also called a mormaer, which was a powerful local ruler in Scotland.

Who Was Duncan II?

Duncan II was born before 1154 and passed away in 1204. He was part of Clan MacDuff, a very important family in Scotland. Because he was the oldest son, he had the right to become the next Earl of Fife. This way of passing down titles is called primogeniture. However, leading the whole family group, or "kin-group," probably went to his cousin, Aed mac Gille Míchéil, because Duncan was so young.

Duncan's Role as a Leader

Like other Earls of Fife before him, Duncan II was given the important job of Justiciar of Scotia. This meant he was a chief judge and administrator for the northern part of Scotland, north of the River Forth.

Because Duncan was still a child when he became Earl, this time was called his "minority." During his minority, Ferchar, the Mormaer of Strathearn, became the most important leader among the Gaelic nobility. He also helped guide the young king, Malcolm IV.

Land and Royal Connections

Some historians believe that a place called Beinn MacDuibh got its name during Duncan's time. This might be when Duncan II gained control of land in that area.

Duncan, like other Earls of Fife, stayed very close to the king. His name appears in many old documents, including a special paper given to a church on the Isle of May.

A Royal Hostage

After William the Lion, the Scottish king, was defeated, a peace agreement called the Treaty of Falaise was made. As part of this treaty, Duncan was supposed to be a hostage. A hostage is someone held by an enemy to make sure promises are kept. However, Duncan likely sent someone else in his place instead of going himself.

Family Life

On Christmas Day in 1160, Duncan married Ada. She was a close relative of King Malcolm IV. Some records say she was Malcolm's half-sister, while others say she was his niece.

Duncan II and Ada had three sons: Malcolm, Duncan, and David. It's interesting that two of his sons were named after Scottish kings. They also had a daughter, but her name is not known.

Importance of the Earls of Fife

The Earls of Fife were very important allies to the Scottish kings, starting from King David I. For example, in 1152, when King David I's son Henry of Scotland died, Duncan I (Duncan II's father) helped introduce Malcolm IV as the new royal heir.

When Duncan II died in 1204, his son Malcolm became the next Earl of Fife.
