Donogh Dáll Ó Derrig facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Donogh Dáll Ó Derrig, also known as Blind Donogh O'Derrick, was an Irish rapparee (a type of outlaw or bandit). He was captured and executed in December 1656.

Donogh Ó Derrig was active in County Kildare, Ireland, during the early 1650s. This was a time right after the Irish Confederate Wars, which had caused a lot of trouble and changes in the country.

Donogh Ó Derrig's Activities

Early Actions and Consequences

In September 1653, a special military court, called a court-martial, was held in Kilkenny. This court found a man named Murtagh Cullen and his wife guilty. They were accused of helping Donogh Ó Derrig by giving him shelter.

The court decided they should face serious consequences. They were given a chance to draw lots to decide who would face the punishment. Mrs. Cullen drew the lot, but her punishment was delayed because she was expecting a baby.

Confrontations and Escapes

In July 1654, Donogh Ó Derrig led his group of outlaws. They were involved in a conflict where an Irishman working as a constable (a type of police officer) for the English was killed. This happened in Timolin, which is in County Kildare.

In March 1655, Ó Derrig's group captured eight surveyors. Surveyors are people who measure and map land. These surveyors were working for a powerful person named Sir William Petty. Ó Derrig's group believed these surveyors were involved in a large plan to unfairly take land.

Because of these actions, a reward of £30 was offered for Donogh Ó Derrig and his main helper, Dermot Ryan.

Family and Capture

In the autumn of 1655, Donogh Ó Derrig's wife was among thirty-seven people who were rounded up. They were then sent away from Ireland on a frigate (a type of sailing ship) from Wexford. This was a form of penal transportation, where people were sent to faraway places as a punishment.

They arrived in Barbados in May 1656. By this time, Donogh Ó Derrig had been captured himself. He was found in a house in Timolin. He was quickly tried and executed. His helper, Dermot Ryan, managed to escape and lived for another two years.
