Discovering Door Village's History

Door Village has a rich history, especially tied to the early days of settlers in Indiana. It played a role in protecting people who were moving into the area.

The Old Fort and Its Story

A very important part of Door Village's past is the Old Fort. This fort was built in 1832. A special marker now shows where the fort once stood. This marker helps us remember the fort's history.

The fort was built during a time when settlers needed protection. A brave young man once rode his pony all the way from Fort Dearborn. He came to warn the settlers in this area that there might be trouble. This warning was about a Native American leader named Black Hawk and his warriors.

How LaPorte County Got Its Name

The name "La Porte" has an interesting origin. French explorers, called "voyageurs," traveled through this area long ago. They noticed a natural opening in the dense forests. These forests stretched from the north and the south. This opening looked like a "door" to them.

Because of this natural "doorway" in the forests, the French called the area "La Porte." This French word means "the door." Later, when the county was formed, it was named LaPorte County after this special natural feature.

Important Roads in Door Village

The marker for the Old Fort is located on Joliet Road. You can find it on the north side of the road, close to where it meets Long Lane. Joliet Road is also historically significant. It follows an old path known as the Old Sauk Trail. This trail stretches from the south side of modern-day LaPorte all the way to the Town of Westville.
