Dora Koch-Stetter (born May 4, 1881 – died January 16, 1968) was a talented German artist. She was known for her beautiful landscape paintings. Dora also painted portraits of people. She created art using a special technique called etching.

Her Artistic Journey

Dora Stetter loved art from a young age. Her mother even ran a drawing school in Berlin. This happened after her father passed away in 1884. So, art was always a part of Dora's life.

Early Training and Teaching

Dora started her art studies in 1899. She trained to be a drawing teacher. This was at the Royal School of Art in Berlin. From 1902 to 1917, she taught art. She had her own studio in Berlin. This helped her support herself.

To become a professional painter, Dora kept learning. In 1901 and 1902, she took more classes. She studied painting and drawing. Her teachers included de:Conrad Fehr and Johannes Heise. In 1903 and 1904, she learned from Lovis Corinth. He was a famous artist in Berlin.

Developing Her Style

From 1910, Dora worked with Arthur Segal. He was an Impressionist painter. In 1911, she joined a group. It was called the Verein der Berliner Künstlerinnen. This means "Society of Berlin women artists."

Dora loved to travel for inspiration. Between 1902 and 1913, she visited many places. She went to Bavaria, Belgium, and Denmark. She also explored Pomerania. In 1911, Dora first visited Ahrenshoop. This is a beautiful place on the Baltic Sea.

Family Life and Art

In 1917, Dora Stetter married Fritz Koch-Gotha. He was also an artist. After marrying, Dora stopped teaching art. She focused on being a mother and housewife. It was hard for women artists back then. Society did not always encourage them.

In 1919, Dora had her only child, Barbara. The Koch and Stetter family loved Fischland. They visited every year from 1922. They often stayed with painter Franz Triebsch. In 1927, they bought a house. It was in Althagen, near Ahrenshoop.

Later Years and Legacy

After buying their house, Dora started painting more. In 1944, her Berlin studio was destroyed. Her apartment and many artworks were lost. So, Althagen became her permanent home.

In the 1950s, Dora painted actively again. Her husband, Fritz, passed away in 1956. Dora then spent time preserving his art. In 1961, she had a stroke. This made her right side paralyzed. But she slowly began to draw and paint again. As she grew weaker, she had to stop painting. Dora Koch-Stetter died on January 16, 1968. She passed away in her home in Althagen.

Many people admire Dora's work. One person said she was "the true pearl" among artists in Ahrenshoop. Her art is still considered brilliant today.
