Dora Stratou (born Dorothea Stratou; 1903–1988) was a famous Greek dancer and choreographer. A choreographer is someone who creates and arranges dance routines. Dora made huge contributions to Greek Folk Dancing and Greek Folk Music. She even released 50 folk music records, which is one of the biggest collections in the world! She also started the famous Greek Dances Theatre "Dora Stratou".

Dora Stratou grew up in Athens, Greece, in a well-known family. Her parents were Maria Koromila and Nikolaos Stratos. From a young age, she developed a deep love for Greek traditions, especially dance and music.

Her Work and Passion

Dora Stratou was not just a dancer; she was also a folklorist. This means she studied and collected information about traditional customs, stories, and especially dances and music. She wrote a book called Greek Traditional Dances in 1979.

To make sure Greek traditions were remembered, Dora Stratou did a lot of important work:

  • She recorded traditional music.
  • She filmed dancers performing old dances.
  • She interviewed people in villages about their dances, traditional clothes (costumes), and local stories.

Dora Stratou's true passion for Greek Dance led her to create something truly special: The Greek Dances Theatre in Athens.

The Greek Dances Theatre

The Greek Dances Theatre is like a living museum. It's a place where you can see regional dances from all over Greece performed exactly as they were done hundreds of years ago. The dancers wear real, old-style costumes, making it feel like you've stepped back in time! It's one of the best living museums in Greece and is unique in the world.

Today, the Greek Dances Theatre also welcomes other folk dance groups from Greece and around the world. The main offices of the Dora Stratou Theatre in Plaka, Athens, are also home to the President's office of the International Dance Council CID which is part of UNESCO.
