Nikolaos Stratos (born May 16, 1872 – died November 28, 1922) was an important Greek politician. He served as the Prime Minister of Greece for a short time in May 1922. Later, he faced serious consequences related to Greece's role in the war in Asia Minor.

Early Political Life

Nikolaos Stratos was born in 1872 in a place called Loutro, Aetolia-Acarnania. He first became a member of the Greek Parliament in 1902. In 1909, he was chosen to be the Interior Minister. This happened when the Military League took power.

In 1910, he joined the Liberal Party. This party was led by a famous politician named Eleftherios Venizelos. The next year, in 1911, Stratos was elected to lead the Parliament as its President.

However, Greece went through a difficult time called the National Schism. During this period, Stratos disagreed with the Liberal Party. He chose to support King Constantine I instead. In 1916, he started his own political group called the "National Conservative Party". He believed Greece should stay neutral during World War I.

Becoming Prime Minister

By 1922, Greece was facing many problems. The war in Asia Minor was not going well. The Greek army had tried to capture Ankara the year before, but they failed.

The Prime Minister at the time, Dimitrios Gounaris, almost lost a special vote in Parliament. Because of this, he resigned on May 3, 1922. King Constantine I then asked Nikolaos Stratos to form a new government. However, Stratos decided to let Petros Protopapadakis try instead. Protopapadakis successfully formed a government a few days later.

Accountability for the War

Later in 1922, Nikolaos Stratos, along with Gounaris, Protopapadakis, and others, were held responsible for the outcome of the war in Asia Minor. This event was known as the Trial of the Six. Stratos was held accountable for his part in the war's events. He faced serious consequences on November 28, 1922, at a place called Goudi.

Family Legacy

Nikolaos Stratos had two children who became well-known. His son, Andreas Stratos, grew up to be an important politician and a historian. His daughter, Dora Stratou, became an actress. She also did a lot to promote traditional Greek folk music and dances.
