Petros Protopapadakis (Greek: Πέτρος Πρωτοπαπαδάκης; December 31, 1854 – November 28, 1922) was an important Greek politician. He served as the Prime Minister of Greece for a short time in 1922.
Early Life and Education
Petros Protopapadakis was born in 1860 on Naxos Island in Greece. He studied math and engineering in Paris, France. Even though he was a professor at the Greek military academy, called Scholi Evelpidon, he was very interested in politics.
Political Career
In 1902, Petros Protopapadakis became a member of the Hellenic Parliament. He first joined the Nationalist Party, which was a conservative group. Later, he became part of the People's Party. He held important jobs in the government, like Minister of Economy and Justice Minister from 1921 to 1922.
Becoming Prime Minister
In 1922, Greece was fighting in the Greco-Turkish War. The Prime Minister at the time, Dimitrios Gounaris, resigned. King Constantine then asked Petros Protopapadakis to become the new Prime Minister. Protopapadakis was Prime Minister for only about three months. He was removed from power by a military coup d'état, which is when the army takes control of the government.
Death
In November 1922, Petros Protopapadakis and five other important government members faced a special trial known as the Trial of the Six. This trial took place at Goudi in Athens. Sadly, Protopapadakis and the others were put to death after the trial.
