The Dorchester Community Church is a special old building located near New Hampshire Route 118 in Dorchester, New Hampshire. It was first built way back in 1828. Later, in 1883, it was made a bit smaller. This church is a great example of a building style called Greek Revival architecture. It's so important that it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. It also became part of the Dorchester Common Historic District in 1985.

Discovering the Church's Design

The Dorchester Community Church stands in the old town center of Dorchester. You can find it where North Dorchester and Town House Roads meet. It's just a short distance northwest of New Hampshire Route 118.

The church sits on the north side of a small grassy area. Nearby, there's an old school building and the town hall from the 1800s. The church itself is a one-story building made of wood. It has a pointed roof and its outside walls are covered with overlapping wooden boards.

A tall tower rises above the roof. The bottom part of the tower is square. Above that, there's an open, eight-sided section. On top of this, you'll see a small dome and a weather vane. The front of the church has three sections, with flat, column-like decorations on the corners.

The main door is in the middle of the front. It has flat, column-like decorations on each side. Above the door, there's a decorative border. The windows are rectangular and have shutters on the sides. They also have small decorative ledges above them.

The Church's Journey Through Time

This church was built in 1828 on a place called Thompson's Hill. It was first known as the South Meetinghouse. The building style, Greek Revival, was very popular back then.

Over time, fewer people were attending the church. So, in 1883, the church was moved. It was taken apart and rebuilt closer to the town hall. When it was rebuilt, it was made a bit smaller than its original size.

In 1940, people in the community worked together to raise money. They used these funds to fix up the building and add electricity. Today, a community group takes care of the church. It is still used for services and gatherings.
