Doris Mary Stocker (who later became Lady Segrave) was a talented British actress and singer. She was especially famous for her roles in Edwardian musical comedies. These were popular stage shows in the early 1900s, known for their catchy songs, dancing, and fun stories.

Early Life and Start in Theatre

Doris Stocker was born in 1886 in Mumbai, India. She was the second of three children. Her father, George Stocker, was an engineer. Her mother, Mary Dunn, brought Doris and her siblings back to England. They lived in London for many years. Doris's older sister, Blanche Stocker, also became an actress and singer.

Doris began her acting journey as a chorus girl. This meant she was part of the singing and dancing group in the background. She worked for a famous theatre producer named George Edwardes at the Gaiety Theatre in London.

Soon, Doris started getting bigger parts in plays. She performed in many popular shows in London's West End theatres. Some of her roles included:

  • Grace Hufnagle in Captain Kidd (1904)
  • Angy Loftus in The Cingalee (1904)
  • Pepzi in A Waltz Dream (1911)
  • Lady Diana Camden in Theodore & Co (1912)
  • A Gipsy Dancer in Gipsy Love (1912)

She even performed in New York City! In 1914, she played the Honorable Baby Vereker in To-Night's the Night on Broadway. She then repeated this role in London in 1915.

Later Life and Marriage

In 1915, during World War I, Doris traveled to Sarawak, Malaysia. She went with Sylvia Brett and Charles Vyner Brooke to visit Charles Brooke, who was the Rajah of Sarawak, a ruler of a kingdom.

On October 4, 1917, Doris married Sir Henry O'Neal De Hane Segrave in London. Henry Segrave was a brave soldier serving as a Captain in the war. After her marriage, Doris decided to stop acting on stage.

Doris Stocker passed away in 1968 in London.
