Doris Stockton facts for kids
Doris G. Skillman Stockton (born 1924, died 2018) was an American mathematician. She was known for writing many math textbooks. For a long time, she taught mathematics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She studied special types of math problems called partial differential equations and Banach spaces.
Life and Education
Doris Stockton was born on February 9, 1924, in New Brunswick, New Jersey. She started college in 1941 at the New Jersey College for Women.
She first planned to study acting. However, she was encouraged to switch to math and physics. This was so she could help with the World War II efforts.
She earned her Ph.D. (a high-level degree) from Brown University in 1958. Her special research was about complex math equations.
Teaching Career
After finishing her studies, Doris Stockton became a professor. She first taught at the University of Connecticut. Soon after, she moved to the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
She worked at the University of Massachusetts for 52 years. She was a math professor there for a very long time. She retired from teaching in 2006.
Doris Stockton was married to Frederick D. Stockton. He was also a professor at the University of Massachusetts. He taught civil engineering.
She passed away on December 13, 2018, in Avon, Connecticut.
