Dorival Guidoni Júnior (born May 28, 1972), known as Doriva, is a Brazilian football coach and a former player. He played as a central midfielder.

Doriva is famous for his time with the English club Middlesbrough from 2003 to 2006. He helped them win the League Cup in 2004. This was a big achievement for the club! He also played for the Brazil national football team from 1995 to 1998. He even made an appearance in the 1998 FIFA World Cup, where Brazil finished as runners-up.

He decided to retire from playing in 2007 due to a health concern. Later, he became a football coach.

Playing Career Highlights

Starting in Brazil

Doriva began his football journey in the youth teams of São Paulo. In 1993, he joined the main team. That same year, he helped São Paulo win two major international titles: the Libertadores da América and the Intercontinental Cup.

In 1995, Doriva moved to Atlético Mineiro. He felt these years were very important for him to grow as a player. His strong performances led to him moving to Europe.

Playing in Europe

After his time in Brazil, Doriva joined Porto in Portugal. He had a very successful period there, winning the Primeira Liga (the top Portuguese league) three times.

Later, he moved to Italy to play for Sampdoria. In 2000, he went to Spain and played for Celta Vigo.

Time at Middlesbrough

In January 2003, Doriva moved to England to play for Middlesbrough. He joined them on a loan deal at first. He quickly became an important player in the midfield.

In his first full season, Doriva was a key player for Middlesbrough. On February 29, 2004, he started in the 2004 Football League Cup Final. Middlesbrough won the match 2-1 against Bolton Wanderers, securing their first ever major trophy! It was a historic moment for the club.

Doriva stayed with Middlesbrough until July 2006. He played many games for them. His only goal for the club came in an FA Cup match in January 2005.

Retirement from Playing

After leaving Middlesbrough, Doriva signed with América-SP in Brazil. During this time, a health issue was found. Because of this, Doriva decided to retire from playing football to focus on his health. Even though later tests showed he might have been able to continue, he stuck with his decision to retire.

Coaching Career

Early Coaching Success

After retiring as a player, Doriva became a coach. In 2014, he was appointed head coach of Ituano. He led the team to an amazing victory in the Campeonato Paulista, which is a major state championship in Brazil. They won the title after a penalty shootout against Santos. This was a huge surprise and a great start to his coaching career!

Later in 2014, he briefly managed Atlético Paranaense.

Managing Vasco da Gama and Other Clubs

In December 2014, Doriva became the manager of Vasco da Gama. He continued his success by leading Vasco da Gama to win the Campeonato Carioca (another state league title) in 2015.

After this, he managed several other Brazilian clubs, including Ponte Preta and São Paulo. He also coached Bahia and Santa Cruz.

In 2017, he managed Atlético Goianiense. He also coached Novorizontino and CRB in 2018.

In 2019, Doriva managed Criciúma and São Bento.

Assistant Coach Roles

More recently, Doriva has taken on assistant coaching roles. In 2021, he became an assistant coach for Corinthians. Since 2023, he has been an assistant coach for the Albania national team.

International Career

Doriva played for the Brazil national football team from 1995 to 1998. He was part of the Brazilian squad that reached the final of the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France. He played one match in the tournament, coming on as a substitute against Morocco. In total, he played 12 games for Brazil.
