Dorival Guidoni Júnior (born on May 28, 1972), known simply as Doriva, is a Brazilian football coach. He used to be a professional footballer who played as a central midfielder.

From 2003 to 2006, Doriva played for the English club Middlesbrough in the Premier League. He helped them win the League Cup in 2004. He also played for the Brazil national football team from 1995 to 1998. He was part of the Brazil team that finished second in the 1998 FIFA World Cup.

Doriva stopped playing football in 2007. This was because he was told he had a heart condition. Later, tests showed that the first diagnosis was wrong, and he could have kept playing. However, he stayed retired.

Doriva's Playing Career

Starting in Brazil

Doriva began his football journey in the youth teams of São Paulo. In 1993, he joined the main team. That same year, he helped São Paulo win two big titles: the Libertadores da América and the Intercontinental Cup.

In 1995, Doriva moved to Atlético Mineiro. He felt that his time there was very important for him to grow as a player. His strong performances led to a big move to Europe.

Playing in Europe

Doriva moved to Portugal to play for Porto. He had a very successful time there, winning the Primeira Liga title three times. After Porto, he transferred to Italy to play for Sampdoria. In 2000, he moved to Spain and joined Celta Vigo.

Time at Middlesbrough

In January 2003, Doriva joined Middlesbrough in England on a loan. He made his first appearance for the club in April 2003. After playing well, he signed a full contract with Middlesbrough in July 2003.

In his first full season, Doriva was a key player in the midfield. On February 29, 2004, he started in the 2004 Football League Cup Final. Middlesbrough won the match 2-1 against Bolton Wanderers, earning their first major trophy. Doriva's only goal for Middlesbrough was in an FA Cup match in January 2005. He left the club in July 2006.

Retirement from Playing

After leaving Middlesbrough, Doriva signed with América-SP in Brazil. While playing there, doctors found what they thought was a heart problem. Because his father and grandfather had both passed away from heart conditions, Doriva decided to retire from football. Later tests showed that the initial diagnosis was incorrect, and his heart was healthy. Even so, he remained retired from playing.

Doriva's Coaching Career

After retiring as a player, Doriva started a new career as a coach.

Early Coaching Roles

In 2009, Doriva joined Ituano as a youth team manager. He later became an assistant manager. In 2014, he was appointed as the head coach. He led Ituano to a surprising victory in the Campeonato Paulista, winning the title after a penalty shootout.

After this success, Doriva became the manager of Atlético Paranaense in June 2014. However, he left the club just two months later.

Managing Various Clubs

In December 2014, Doriva was named manager of Vasco da Gama. He led them to win another state league title. In August 2015, he moved to Ponte Preta. Just two months later, he left Ponte Preta to join São Paulo. His time at São Paulo was short, lasting only one month.

In 2016, Doriva signed with Bahia. Despite a good winning record, he was dismissed in June. He then had a two-month period in charge of Santa Cruz in the same year.

In 2017, Doriva managed Atlético Goianiense for ten games. In 2018, he coached Novorizontino, reaching the quarter-finals of the 2018 Campeonato Paulista. He also managed CRB in 2018.

In 2019, Doriva coached Criciúma and then São Bento.
