Early Life and Family

Dorothea Dreier was born in Brooklyn, New York, on December 8, 1870. She had five siblings. Her sisters were also very well-known. These included the painter Katherine S. Dreier. Her other sisters were Mary Dreier, a social reformer, and Margaret Dreier Robins, a leader for workers' rights.

Becoming an Artist

Dorothea studied art in New York City. She learned from famous teachers like John Twachtman and William Merritt Chase. She also attended the Art Students League of New York, a well-known art school. Later, she became a member of the Society of Independent Artists. This group helped artists show their work freely.

Her Legacy

Dorothea Dreier passed away in 1923 in Saranac, New York. After she died, the Brooklyn Museum held a special show of her art in 1925. This type of show, called a retrospective, looks back at an artist's entire career. Today, some of Dreier's paintings are part of the Brooklyn Museum's collection. Her personal papers and records are kept at the Archives of American Art. This is a part of the Smithsonian Institution.
