Dorothea Wierer is an Italian biathlete born on April 3, 1990. Biathlon is a winter sport that combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting. Athletes ski a course and then stop at shooting ranges to hit targets. It's a tough sport that needs both speed and accuracy!

Dorothea is one of the best biathletes in the world. She has won many medals at the Winter Olympics and Biathlon World Championships. She is known for her calm shooting and strong skiing.

Dorothea Wierer started competing in the Biathlon World Cup in 2009. This is a series of races held throughout the winter season. She quickly became a top athlete.

First Big Wins

Dorothea won her first World Championships medal in 2013. It was a bronze medal in the women's relay race. This was a historic moment for Italian women's biathlon. In 2019, she won her first individual gold medal at the World Championships. This was in the 12.5 km mass start event. She has won a total of 12 medals at the World Championships. These include 4 gold, 5 silver, and 3 bronze medals.

Olympic Success

Dorothea has won three bronze medals at the Winter Olympics.

  • At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, she won a bronze medal. This was in the mixed relay event. She raced with her teammates Karin Oberhofer, Dominik Windisch, and Lukas Hofer.
  • At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, she won another bronze medal. This was also in the mixed relay. Her teammates were Lisa Vittozzi, Lukas Hofer, and Dominik Windisch.
  • At the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, China, she won her first individual Olympic medal. It was a bronze in the 7.5 km sprint race.

World Championship Highlights

Dorothea has had amazing success at the World Championships.

  • In 2019, she became the Mass Start World Champion.
  • In 2020, she won two more gold medals. She became the Pursuit World Champion and the Individual World Champion.
  • In 2023, she won another gold medal in the women's relay.

World Cup Achievements

Dorothea earned her first individual World Cup win in 2015. This was in Östersund, Sweden. By the end of the 2021-22 season, she had won 13 individual World Cup races. She also had 45 individual podium finishes. A podium finish means placing in the top three.

She also had great success in relay races. She finished on the podium 23 times in relays, with five victories.

Dorothea made history by winning the Overall World Cup title twice.

  • She won the 2018–19 Overall World Cup. She was the first Italian biathlete (male or female) to do this!
  • She defended her title in the 2019–20 season. This made her the first woman to win back-to-back overall titles since 2002.

She has also won four special World Cup titles for specific race types:

  • The Individual World Cup in 2015–16 and 2020-21.
  • The Pursuit World Cup in 2018–19.
