Early Life and Art Education

Dorothy Bassano was born in a town called Cockermouth, England. Her father was an art teacher. This meant art was a big part of her life from a young age.

Even while she was still in school, Dorothy loved art. She took evening classes at the Liverpool School of Art. This helped her learn many important art skills.

After school, Dorothy kept taking art classes. She worked in a department store to help her family. This was especially important after her father passed away.

Art and War Years

In 1940, Dorothy married Don Bradford. He worked for the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board. Don also served overseas during World War II.

In 1942, Dorothy got a job in London. She worked for CEMA, which stood for the Council for the Encouragement of Music and the Arts. CEMA helped keep art and culture alive during the war.

At CEMA, Dorothy helped organize art and design shows. She also continued her art studies. She took evening classes at the Central School of Art. She also studied at Saint Martin's School of Art. Later, she attended Leeds College of Art.
