Her Early Life and Education
Dorothy Koomson studied Psychology and Journalism. She earned two degrees from Leeds University. Before becoming a full-time novelist, she wrote for different women's magazines. She also wrote for newspapers. Dorothy has lived in Sydney, Australia, for two years. She currently lives in Brighton, England.
Her Journey as a Writer
Dorothy wrote her very first novel when she was only 13 years old! This book was never published. Her first published book, The Cupid Effect, came out in 2003. This was her debut novel, meaning it was the first one she officially released.
Her second novel, The Chocolate Run, was published in 2004. In 2006, she released her third book, My Best Friend's Girl. This book became very popular. It was even chosen for a special reading list called "Richard and Judy's Summer Reads." This helped the book sell many copies.
Dorothy continued to write many successful novels. Some of her other books include Marshmallows For Breakfast (2007) and Goodnight, Beautiful (2008). In 2010, she published The Ice Cream Girls. Her books have been translated into more than 30 different languages around the world. This means people in many countries can enjoy her stories.
Standing Up for Black Authors
In 2020, people around the world protested for racial justice. These protests were part of the Black Lives Matter movement. During this time, Dorothy Koomson spoke out about her experiences. She explained that it can be difficult for Black authors in the UK publishing industry. She felt that Black authors were sometimes treated unfairly. They were not always given the support they deserved.
Her experiences helped to highlight the need for more fairness in publishing. Later that year, Dorothy Koomson was recognized for her influence. She was named one of the 100 most influential people of African or African Caribbean heritage in the United Kingdom. This recognition came when she was included in the 2021 edition of the annual Powerlist.
