Working with the Dallas Stars
Doug Armstrong started working with the Minnesota North Stars hockey team in the 1990–91 season. He stayed with the team when they moved to Dallas in 1993. They then became the Dallas Stars.
He became the general manager of the Dallas Stars on January 25, 2002. Before that, he helped the Stars win the Stanley Cup in 1999 as an assistant general manager. His father, Neil Armstrong, was also famous in hockey. He was a linesman and is in the Hockey Hall of Fame.
As general manager, Doug Armstrong made some important moves. He helped draft talented players like Trevor Daley, James Neal, Loui Eriksson, and Jamie Benn. He also traded for Mike Ribeiro, which helped the team's offense a lot.
On November 13, 2007, Doug Armstrong was no longer the general manager of the Stars. During his time, the Stars had a great winning record. It was the best winning percentage for a general manager in the team's history.
Leading the St. Louis Blues
On May 29, 2008, the St. Louis Blues hired Doug Armstrong. He started as the director of player personnel. After two years, he became the team's general manager. This happened when Larry Pleau retired.
One of his first big moves as general manager was getting goalie Jaroslav Halak in 2010. He traded Lars Eller and Ian Schultz for him.
In 2013, Doug Armstrong was named the NHL General Manager of the Year. He was also a runner-up for the award in 2019.
During his time with the Blues, Armstrong brought in many star players. Some of these players include Martin Brodeur, Ryan O'Reilly, Vladimir Tarasenko, and Jordan Binnington. He also helped the team get players like Alex Pietrangelo and Colton Parayko.
In the 2018–19 season, the Blues had an amazing comeback. They finished third in their division. Then, they went on to win their first-ever Stanley Cup championship! They beat the Boston Bruins in seven exciting games.
The Blues have made the Stanley Cup Playoffs many times under Armstrong's leadership. They have reached the second round five times. They also made it to the Western Conference Final twice. And, of course, they won one championship.
On April 10, 2024, Armstrong earned his 600th win as the Blues General Manager. This made him one of only 19 general managers in NHL history to reach this many wins with one team. A month before that, he reached 800 wins overall. He was the second quickest GM to do so.
At the end of the 2024-25 season, Armstrong ranked ninth all-time among GMs with 855 wins.
After the 2025-26 season, Doug Armstrong will pass the general manager role to former Blues player Alexander Steen. Armstrong will still be with the club. He will be the President of Hockey Operations.
International Hockey Success
Doug Armstrong has also been a big part of Hockey Canada. He has helped Canada win many gold medals.

He was supposed to be the General Manager for Team Canada's 2022 Olympic team. However, NHL players did not go to those Olympics because of the Covid Pandemic.
