Doug Hinds was first chosen to be part of Canada's Olympic team in 1980. This was for the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. However, he did not get to compete. This was because many countries, including Canada, decided to boycott those Games. A boycott means refusing to participate as a protest.
Competing at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics
Four years later, Doug Hinds got his chance. He competed at the 1984 Summer Olympics held in Los Angeles. He raced in the men's 400 metres event. He finished 24th overall in this challenging race.
He was also a key member of the Canadian 4 × 400 metres relay team. In a relay race, four runners each complete a part of the total distance. Doug Hinds ran alongside Michael Sokolowski, Brian Saunders, and Tim Bethune.
The team performed very well. They set a new Canadian record in their first race, finishing in 3 minutes and 4.47 seconds. Doug Hinds ran his part of the relay in an impressive 45.04 seconds. The team finished eighth overall in the competition.
