Douglas Percy Freeman (born July 21, 1916 – died April 3, 2013) was an English cricket player. He was a left-handed batsman. Douglas Freeman played for two main teams: Dorset County Cricket Club and Kent County Cricket Club. He was born in Sherborne, Dorset.
Early Cricket Days
Douglas Freeman started his cricket career playing for Dorset County Cricket Club. His first big game for Dorset was in 1934. It was part of the Minor Counties Championship against Cornwall.
He played for Dorset in these minor county games for many years, from 1934 to 1948. He played in 32 matches for Dorset. His highest score was 89 runs. He made this score in 1935 against Devon.
Playing for Kent
In 1936, Douglas Freeman also played for the Kent Second XI team. The next year, in 1937, he played eight more games for Kent Second XI. He also played in one first-class cricket match for Kent County Cricket Club. This game was against Somerset in the 1937 County Championship.
In that match, he scored a total of ten runs. Kent lost the game by a lot. After this, he played for Somerset Second XI in 1939. Then, after the Second World War, he returned to play for Dorset.
A Cricket Family
Douglas Freeman came from a family of cricketers. His father, Edward, and his grandfather, also named Edward, both played first-class cricket. His great-uncle, Thomas Russell, was also a first-class player. Douglas also had a brother, another Edward, who played for Dorset.
His uncle was Tich Freeman. Tich Freeman played for Kent between 1914 and 1936. He is known as Kent's best wicket-taker ever.
Douglas Freeman passed away in 2013 at the age of 96. He died in Westbury on Trym, Bristol. At the time of his death, he was the oldest living player who had played for Kent. He was also the last player who had played for the county before World War II.
