The Douglas Hyde Gallery is a cool place in Trinity College Dublin in Dublin, Ireland. It's an art gallery that shows contemporary art, which means art made in our time. It's open to everyone and gets money from the public.

The gallery was started by the Arts Council and Trinity College Dublin. It first opened its doors in March 1978. It was the first public gallery in Ireland just for contemporary art. It was also the first art gallery inside a university in Ireland. For many years, it was the only public gallery in Ireland showing modern art. In 2017, Georgina Jackson became the director. She took over from John Hutchinson, who had been in charge for 25 years.

The Douglas Hyde Gallery has two main rooms where they show art. They often have two shows happening at the same time. These shows might even be about similar ideas or feelings.

Exploring the Galleries

The Douglas Hyde Gallery has two special rooms for art. Each room offers a different experience for visitors.

Gallery 1

Gallery 1 is the main exhibition space at the Douglas Hyde Gallery. It was designed by Paul Koralek. Many famous artists from all over the world have shown their work here. Some of these artists include Fischli/Weiss, Marlene Dumas, and Gabriel Orozco.

Irish artists have also had important shows in Gallery 1. These include Dorothy Cross, Willie Doherty, and Niamh O'Malley. This gallery is known for showing exciting and thought-provoking art.

Gallery 2 opened in 2001 and was designed by McCullough Mulvin Architects. This space is used for different kinds of exhibitions. Besides showing art by modern artists, it often displays special collections.

The gallery's former director, John Hutchinson, used Gallery 2 to show interesting objects. These included ethnographic items, which are things from different cultures. He also showed "outsider art," which is art made by people who aren't trained artists. These types of art are sometimes not shown in bigger museums. Some popular past exhibitions included Nepalese Shamanic objects and Japanese Tea Bowls.

A special series of shows in Gallery 2 is called 'The Paradise'. For these shows, artists are asked to create new art. They base their work on their own idea of what 'Paradise' means. By February 2011, there had been 34 exhibitions in this unique series.

Music Events

The Douglas Hyde Gallery is also well-known for its cool music events. Many popular musicians have played concerts there. Artists like Cat Power, Sufjan Stevens, and Laura Veirs have all performed in the gallery.

Sometimes, the music shows are connected to the art exhibitions. For example, in 2008, the musician Jandek played a concert. This happened at the same time as an exhibition of his album covers. In 2009, Jim White played a gig to celebrate his exhibition. His show featured items from the American South. Often, the music and art simply share a similar mood or feeling.
