The Douglas Hyde Gallery is a cool art gallery in Trinity College Dublin in Dublin, Ireland. It's a special place where you can see contemporary art, which means art made in our time.

This gallery was started in 1978 by the Arts Council and Trinity College Dublin. It was the first gallery in Ireland that showed only modern art and was open to everyone. For many years, it was the only public gallery like it in the country! Today, Georgina Jackson is the director, taking over from John Hutchinson, who led the gallery for 25 years.

The Douglas Hyde Gallery has two main rooms where they show art. Often, the art in both rooms will have a similar idea or feeling.

Exploring the Galleries

The Douglas Hyde Gallery has two main exhibition spaces. These spaces are used to show different art at the same time. Sometimes, the art in both rooms is connected by a similar idea or mood.

Gallery 1: The Main Space

Gallery 1 is the biggest room in the gallery. It was designed by Paul Koralek. Many famous artists from all over the world have shown their art here. Some of these artists include Fischli/Weiss, Marlene Dumas, and Gabriel Orozco.

Irish artists have also had their work displayed in Gallery 1. These include Dorothy Cross, Willie Doherty, and Niamh O'Malley.

Gallery 2: A Space for Unique Art

Gallery 2 opened in 2001 and was designed by McCullough Mulvin Architects. This space is used for modern art, but it also shows special collections.

The former director, John Hutchinson, often used Gallery 2 to display unusual objects. These included items from different cultures or art made by people who didn't go to art school. These types of art are sometimes overlooked by bigger museums. Some popular exhibitions here included Nepalese Shamanic objects and Japanese Tea Bowls.

A special series of shows in Gallery 2 is called 'The Paradise'. For these shows, artists create new art or present works based on their own idea of what 'Paradise' means. There have been many 'Paradise' exhibitions over the years.

Music at the Gallery

The Douglas Hyde Gallery is also known for its cool music events. Famous musicians like Cat Power and Sufjan Stevens have played concerts right inside the gallery!

Sometimes, the music performances are linked to the art exhibitions. For example, Jandek played a concert when his album covers were on display. Other times, the music and art just share a similar feeling or atmosphere. It's a great way to experience art and music together!
