About Douglas Palmer
Douglas Palmer is a former politician who served as the mayor of Trenton, New Jersey. Being a mayor means he was the main leader of the city government. He was the first African-American person to hold this important job in Trenton.
Early Life and Education
Douglas Palmer grew up in Trenton, New Jersey. He went to public schools there. Later, he attended the Bordentown Military Institute in Bordentown, New Jersey.
After high school, he went to Hampton University in Virginia. This is a private college that has historically served Black students. In 1973, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management. He is also a member of a social group called Groove Phi Groove Social Fellowship Incorporated.
Becoming Mayor of Trenton
Douglas Palmer became the mayor of Trenton on July 1, 1990. He won the election against Carmen Armenti, who had been the city council president and a former mayor.
As mayor, he worked to improve the city. He helped start the Trenton Office of Policy Studies. This office is now called the John S. Watson Institute for Public Policy. It works with Thomas Edison State University and other groups. It acts like a "think tank," which means it does research to help the city's leaders make good decisions.
Mayor Palmer also put together a strong team of advisors. This team included people like William Watson, Alan Mallach, and Elizabeth Johnson. They helped him manage different parts of the city, such as housing and recreation.
Working with Other Mayors
Mayor Palmer was part of a group called the Mayors Against Illegal Guns Coalition. This group included mayors from different political parties (it was a bipartisan group). Their main goal was to make communities safer. They wanted to get illegal guns off the streets.
The mayors of Boston, Thomas Menino, and New York City, Michael Bloomberg, were co-leaders of this group.
End of His Mayoral Term
On December 7, 2009, Mayor Palmer announced that he would not run for mayor again. He had served five terms, which is a very long time for a mayor. His last day in office was June 30, 2010.
