Douglas Harold Palmer, born on October 19, 1951, is a well-known former politician. He made history as the first African-American mayor of Trenton, New Jersey.

About Douglas Palmer
Early Life and Education
Douglas Palmer grew up in Trenton. He went to public schools there. Later, he graduated from the Bordentown Military Institute. He then studied Business Management at Hampton University in Virginia, finishing in 1973. He is also a member of the Groove Phi Groove fellowship.
Mayor of Trenton
Douglas Palmer became the mayor of Trenton on July 1, 1990. He won the election against Carmen Armenti. He served as mayor for five terms, which is 20 years. His time as mayor ended on June 30, 2010.
During his time as mayor, Palmer helped start the John S. Watson Institute for Public Policy. This institute works with Thomas Edison State University. It helps the city administration by doing important research.
Mayor Palmer also put together a skilled team. This team included William Watson as Chief of Staff. Alan Mallach was the Director of Housing and Urban Development. Elizabeth Johnson was the Director of Recreation, Natural Resources, and Culture.
National Leadership
Palmer was part of the Mayors Against Illegal Guns Coalition. This group included mayors from different political parties. Their main goal was to make communities safer. They worked to remove illegal guns from the streets. Boston Mayor Thomas Menino and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg co-chaired this group.
In 2006, Douglas Palmer became the President of the United States Conference of Mayors. He held this important role until 2008. This organization helps mayors across the country work together.
Retirement from Office
On December 7, 2009, Mayor Palmer announced he would not run for mayor again. He decided not to seek a sixth term.
