Dover Island (Nova Scotia) facts for kids
Dover Island is a small island located about one mile (1.6 km) off the coast of West Dover, Nova Scotia. It is known as one of the best places for bouldering in Nova Scotia and the top spot in Atlantic Canada. People love Dover Island because it offers both exciting climbing challenges and amazing scenery.
The island has over 100 bouldering problems, which are like puzzles you solve by climbing. These problems range in difficulty from V0 (easy) to V10 (very hard). There are still many new climbing routes waiting to be discovered! Dover Island is also a lovely place for a vacation and sometimes even hosts weddings.
Island Nature
Dover Island is home to many special plants. Scientists have found 13 rare and endangered species here. An endangered species is a type of plant or animal that is at risk of disappearing forever.
One of the plants found here is the Slender Blue Flag Iris. Dover Island has one of the largest groups of these irises. Experts believe there might be at least 50 different rare and endangered species living on the island.
Getting There
For many years, people would arrange rides to Dover Island with a local fisherman and blacksmith named Norm. He helped visitors get to the island until he retired in 2011.
Since May 2012, a local bed and breakfast, Ocean Spray B&B, has provided boat service for climbers and other visitors. This makes it easier for people to explore the island's natural beauty.
