A Model's Life
Early Life and Discovery
Dovima was born in Queens, New York City. Her father was a policeman, and her mother was from Ireland. Dovima was special because she was the first model to use just one name. She created "Dovima" by taking the first two letters of her three given names: Dorothy, Virginia, and Margaret.
One day, an editor from Vogue magazine discovered Dovima on a New York sidewalk. The very next day, she had a photo shoot with the famous photographer Irving Penn.
Becoming a Top Model
Dovima worked closely with another well-known photographer, Richard Avedon. One of their most famous pictures is called Dovima with the Elephants. It was taken in Paris in 1955. The photo shows Dovima in a long black evening dress standing with circus elephants. This dress was the first evening gown designed for Christian Dior by his new assistant, Yves Saint Laurent. This iconic photo sold for over a million dollars in 2010!
Dovima was known as the highest-paid model of her time. She earned $60 an hour, which was a lot when most top models made up to $25 an hour. Because of this, people called her the "Dollar-a-Minute Girl."
Acting and Later Years
Dovima also tried acting. She had a small part in the 1957 movie Funny Face. In the film, she played a fashionable but not-so-smart model named Marion.
On July 14, 1958, Dovima had a daughter named Allison. Allison's father was Allan Murray, Dovima's second husband.
After her marriage to Allan Murray ended, Dovima faced financial difficulties. She tried working as an actress and then as an agent. By the 1970s, she moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to live with her parents. In the 1980s, she worked as a hostess at a pizza place called The Two Guys Pizza Parlor.
Dovima passed away on May 3, 1990, at the age of 62. She died from liver cancer.
