Yves Saint Laurent (born August 1, 1936 – died June 1, 2008) was a very famous French fashion designer. He was born Yves Henri Donat Mathieu Saint Laurent in Algeria. Many people, like the Daily Telegraph, called him "one of the greatest figures in French fashion in the 20th century."

In 1985, a book called Couture: the Great Fashion Designers said that Yves Saint Laurent was the most celebrated and important designer of the past 25 years. She wrote that he helped bring back high fashion and made ready-to-wear clothes popular and respected.

Becoming a Top Fashion Designer

Yves Saint Laurent started his amazing career at the House of Dior. This was a very famous fashion company. He took over as the main designer after Christian Dior passed away in 1957. Christian Dior had started the company after World War II.

Saint Laurent was a brilliant choice for the job. He created six successful fashion collections for Dior. However, he had to leave in 1960 for military service.

Starting His Own Fashion House

Military service was a difficult time for Saint Laurent. He had to leave early due to health challenges. After this, the House of Dior decided to let him go.

But this did not stop him! With help from an American millionaire, he was able to start his very own fashion house. This new company was called Yves Saint Laurent. For the rest of his life, his fashion house was one of the best in Paris.

His Lasting Impact and Art Collection

Yves Saint Laurent changed fashion in many ways. He made clothes that were both elegant and modern. He was known for creating the "Le Smoking" tuxedo for women. This was a big step for women's fashion.

Saint Laurent and his close friend and business partner, Pierre Bergé, had a huge art collection. After Saint Laurent passed away, this collection was sold at an auction in Paris in 2009. It raised about 300 million euros. This money was used to create a foundation that supports important AIDS research.

Yves Saint Laurent died in Paris, France, when he was 71 years old. He passed away from brain cancer.
