Dowling is a small community in Michigan, United States. It is located in Baltimore Township in Barry County. Dowling is known as a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's an area identified by the U.S. Census Bureau for collecting statistics. It is not an officially incorporated town or city. In 2020, about 351 people lived in Dowling.
History of Dowling
The area where Dowling is now was settled a long time ago. As early as 1842, people informally called the settlement "Baltimore." This name was a tribute to the original home of some important early settlers.
A post office was set up in May 1850, also named Baltimore. However, in March 1880, the name was officially changed to Dowling.
Geography of Dowling
Dowling is found in the southeastern part of Barry County, Michigan. The main part of the community is where the state highway M-37 crosses East Dowling Road.
M-37 is an important road. It goes north about 9 miles (14 km) to Hastings, which is the main city in Barry County. If you go south on M-37, it's about 16 miles (26 km) to downtown Battle Creek.
The office for Baltimore Township is located about 1 mile (1.6 km) east of the center of Dowling. The southern edge of Dowling borders Johnstown Township.
According to the United States Census Bureau, Dowling covers a total area of about 6.3 square miles (16.3 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 6.1 square miles (15.7 square kilometers), is land. The rest, about 0.2 square miles (0.5 square kilometers), is water. This water area includes the northern part of Clear Lake.
