The Dr. Chester Hunt Office is a really old and important building in Windham, Connecticut. It's located in a village called Windham Center. This building was probably built in the early 1800s. It's special because it's one of the few buildings left from that time in the area. It shows us what commercial buildings looked like during the Federal period. Because it's so important, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.

What Does the Dr. Chester Hunt Office Look Like?
The Dr. Chester Hunt Office building is on the west side of the Windham Center green. It faces the green across Windham Green Road. You can find it near the Windham Free Library, just a short walk north of it.
Building Features
It's a small building made of wood. It has a special roof called a gambrel roof, which has two different slopes on each side. The outside walls are covered with clapboard siding.
The front of the building has the main door. On each side of the door, there are narrow windows with six small glass panes on the top and six on the bottom. Above the door, in the pointy part of the roof, there's another window. This window has a round arch shape at the top.
There's also another door on the left side of the building. This door looks very old and might be original. Next to it, there's a window with twelve small glass panes on the top and twelve on the bottom.
The History of the Dr. Chester Hunt Office
This office building was constructed in the early 1800s. We don't know exactly what it was used for when it was first built. However, many parts of the original building are still there today.
Original Details and Use
For example, the outside clapboard siding was put on with handcut nails. Inside, you can still see some of the original stencilwork on the walls. This means patterns were painted using stencils.
Later, in the middle of the 1800s, a person named Dr. Hunt used this building. It was his office and a place where he gave out medicine. At that time, the building was located behind his house. His house was on the southwest corner of the Windham Green.
Moving the Building
The Dr. Chester Hunt Office was later moved to where it stands today. It was given as a gift to the library association. This move helped preserve the building and keep it safe for future generations to see and learn from.
